To see a member of either party stand up for the Constitution and civil liberties, against thier party’s “mainstream”, is incredibly heartening. I think there are many people in Iowa who would agree if thier party let them. I’m registered as a Democrat, only because I’m forced to pick in order to caucus. Maybe if Independents weren’t forced to chose a party, there would be more room for agreement on these social issues, and the legislature could focus on running the government.?
Thank you for your leadership
I have been a lawyer in Iowa for 30 years, the last 25 of which have been spent, at least half-time, practicing family law. My political leanings are liberal-libertarian. I am married with one son, three step-sons, and four grandchildren.
This morning, my experience with Iowa families over the last 30 years and my political-historical-constitutional perspective compel me to enthusiastically applaud Senator Angelo’s efforts. The Iowa Supreme Court’s order in the Varnum case and Senator Angelo’s establishment of Iowa Republicans for Freedom make me very proud indeed to be an Iowan and an American.
Prior committments do not allow me to be present in Greene Square Park this morning but I wish you the very best.
I was a lifelong Republican until the last six years when I was happy to caucus and vote for Barack Obama. I am glad to finally see mainstream Republicans stand up for party values. Abortion and sexual orientation are SOCIAL issues and not political and cannot and should not be legislated. There are plenty of really BIG issues to address — put these (abortion and sexual orientation) on the back shelf and stop spending valuable legislative time debating them. We all know Vander Plaats needs to keep his name in the public eye so he can run for governor eventually. Heaven help us if he is ever elected!! Who I vote for in 2012 depends on the candidate but so far there are no Republicans I can support and Obama will again get my vote. However, I hope Republicans for Freedom can bring to light some of the hypocrisy of the Tea Party movement in Iowa. Incidentally., I am 85 years old and consider myself a conservative liberal or a liberal conservative, your choice. thanks for your efforts.
