Nice article. I'm curious why republicans are against same-sex marriage? Marriage is a fundamental right. Should those who support same-sex marriage be applauded because they're finally supporting a fundamental right?

As a gay couple of almost 30 years, and one that is legally married by the Great State of Iowa, I cannot express how much leadership of Iowans on this matter means to the rest of the country. As a native Texas and presently living in Texas, I can say that Ms Potts's support of Perry, while her right, was misplaced if she believes for one moment that he, his wife, his party or the Texas legislature accepts or tolerates gay people. Perry has refused to even support the removal of Texas's law on sodomy from the books (US Supreme Court ruled Texas's sodomy law unconstitutional). Perry has stated that leaving it on the books, "is appropriate". Perry has even suggested that gays should leave Texas if they don't like the lack of legal recognition in the state. While none of the Republican candidates for President offer ANY hope of progress for the gay community, Perry was only slight better than Santorum on the issues of importance to the gay community and is certainly NOT a friend of the gay community.

A plank for marriage equality was successful at my caucus, but did not show up at the convention. Apparently it had been ditched by the platform committee. I didn't realize I'd have to re-submit the plank at the convention and I missed the opportunity.

The editorial today by Jeff Angelo brought a smile to my face. Finally, someone who made sense about what Iowa republicans should stand for - freedom. I am a republican with friends and family that are gay and it angers me that my party has a platform that wants to discriminate against them. Leave these people alone and get the government out of their private business. The law has passed. Let's worry about things that really matter - jobs and a balanced budget. By the way, Cindy Golding's stance on the same sex issue was the reason I voted for a democrat.

Your headline says Iowa voters, but your post makes it sound like the poll was conducted nationally. I was confused at first.

Also, you didn't mention that those results were from voters who expect to vote Republican, which makes the results all the more surprising. I thought at first that the numbers included liberals and Democrats, which would push the pro-marriage numbers up. But to see that 22% of Iowa *Republican* voters support same-sex marriage... that's something!
